I started out in my art career doing stipple (dots) only scrimshaw. Basically you use magnification of some kind and by hand poke what seems like a millions dots into the piece/medium your working on then fill those dots with ink (think tattooing) to make a pointillism picture.

One of my favorite scrimshaws below, I still regret selling it. This scrimshaw is only about 2.5" wide.
